History of Council 26
- The council was chartered on August 30, 1885. The original members were: James Coogan,
James Byrnes, W. J. Coyle, Patrick Johnson, John O’Brien, J. B. McCue, M. W. Broderick,
Charles Cannon, William Conlin, T. F. Gogarty, Martin Broderick, John Mooney, M.
J. King, Martin Kennedy, M. E. Kane, William McGinn, E. D. Coogan and T. F. McCarthy.
- James Coogan was the council’s first Grand Knight.
- The council met in the Coogan building on Main Street from 1885 until 1923. The Knights’
meetings were held upstairs with a drug and grocery store downstairs. The building
was located just south of the canal bridge.
- In 1923, the Knights moved to the Bailey House. The Bailey House was also known as
the Horton House and was located on Spring Street where the Spring Gardens apartments
now reside.
- The building housed a council room, various recreation rooms and a social center.
There was a an on-site apartment for the custodian.
- In 1963, the Knights moved into the current building on Elm Street.
